Wellington uses its close local knowledge to source land for projects, and Till Road in Lowestoft is a good example of this in action. Formerly owned by holiday company Hoseasons, whose headquarters are next door, Wellington realised that the warehouse site on Till Road has not been in use for some time, and recognised the opportunity which the site presented.
At the same time, Wellington’s close working partnership with Saffron Housing Trust meant that the company knew the housing provider was seeking to provide more ‘HOLD’ bungalows (Home Ownership for people with Long-term Disabilities) in town-centre locations.
Grasping the nettle, Wellington approached Hoseasons and purchased the land, and obtained planning permission to build affordable housing on it. It was then able to present Saffron with a ready-to-build opportunity, one which the Trust seized on enthusiastically.
The result is 17 new affordable homes, of which eight are HOLD homes, helping Saffron to meet their own targets for this kind of accommodation, located ideally just a couple of minutes’ walk from the town centre.
